League Upset

03 Oct 2010

Pocklington Predators U13s      4
Selby Town U13s      1

Sporting a strong side this weekend, the Pocklington Predators upset the York City & District Associate football league with a 4 – 1 win over last season’s league winners Selby Town. Since their entrance in the league last season, Selby have yet to be beaten, until now that is. Not even the torrential rain could dampen the home side’s spirits and determination to win.

This week’s line-up saw Alex Varley in goal, Nathan Smith, Nathan Saltmer, Harry Crusher, Stuart Wright and Matt Terry in defence, Huw Jones, Jamie Harvey and Ryan Gaughan in mid-field, Joe Aconley and Ed Borrie on the wings and George Pilkington, Olli Hughes and Rob Cooney playing forward.

Shortly after the first kick, Pocklington were ahead as a strong strike forward allowed George Pilkington to place the ball around the keeper taking the home side into the lead. By half time, the Predators had notched a 2 – nil advantage as Nathan Saltmer’s free kick over the visitor’s back line allowed Ryan Gaughan to capitalise.

After half time, Pocklington pushed hard to maintain their lead and were rewarded with a scintillating drive from Rob Cooney to eventually outplay the keeper and raise the lead status to 3 goals to nil.

Maintaining a tightly knitted back line meant that very little got through, and it was a corner into a crowded goal mouth that produced the only surge for Selby, closing their deficit to within 2 goals. Pocklington, needing to stamp their authority on the match and undeterred, raised their lead again as a goal kick fell short allowing George Pilkington to take his second of the match and assure the Predators of a well deserved victory.

With such a tight and well performing team, it is difficult to find any one player that stands out amongst the rest, but for sheer grit and determination, Nathan Smith, Huw Jones and Rob Cooney deserve special mention.
