The Predators Chalk Up Another Victory
31 Oct 2010
Pocklington Predators U13s | 2 |
Wigginton Grasshoppers U13s | 1 |
After a 2 week hiatus, the Predators were back in action again this week against the Wigginton Grasshoppers, but this time playing hosts. Since the last match against them was considered amongst the toughest of the season so far, there was no reason to doubt that this match would be any less of a challenge.
From the outset, Wigginton proved a strong force to be reckoned with, and yet it was Pocklington that opened the score-line with a cross from Ryan Gaughan that allowed Jamie Harvey a simple tap into the net. Undaunted, Wigginton came straight back, catching the Predators on the back foot and drawing the keeper out of position to equal the score.
As the match settled into a tough bout of hard but fair play from both sides, it was Pocklington that began to flourish into the dominant side. This was undoubtedly helped by the skills and raw determination of Huw Jones, whose tenacity and awareness of the game was a real privilege to watch.
The second half saw manager Joe Cooney make some bold positional changes, bringing Nathan Smith from his usual position in defence up into mid-field and some other, equally dramatic changes. These changes bore fruit almost straight away George Pilkington scythed his way right up the wing making a near perfect cross to Nathan allowing him to chalk up his first goal of the season and take the Predators to a 2 – 1 lead.
The predators managed to sustain this lead despite the tough competition, making keeper Alex Varley work hard at times. In the final analysis, both teams played their best with the Predators being slightly stronger on the day.
