Pocklington Bow Out of League Cup

Pocklington suffered an upset this Sunday, as league newcomers, Wheldrake, boxed the predators in, denying them the space to play the football that has so successfully worked for them. As the clock ticked away, tempers flared but the Predators had little answer for the tough and tenacious visitors. A final score of 1 – nil to Wheldrake was all it took for them to earn the coveted place in the 4th round of the League Cup competition.

Play wasn’t all one sided and, in the final analysis, it was the Pocklington Predators that tipped the scales in terms of possession. Yet, even with the bulk of the possession, Pocklington failed to convert any of the chances they created for themselves. This was for lack of trying, but the ball just wouldn’t find its mark.

The Pocklington back line was held strong by both Stuart Wright and Eric Hogan, with Sam Flinton in goal, but mid-way through the second half, a strong drive through the home side’s defence resulted in a great cross that was intercepted in a superb shot that immediately changed the complexion of the game.

Now 1 – nil down, the Predators shrugged off any complacency that may have had, but the visitors proved too much for them, denying every opportunity with either tough and physical challenges or the deft hands of the their keeper, who had a very busy and successful match.

With such a physical match, the Predators suffered injuries and, as they continued to grind on, tempers flared resulting in a sending off. Now down to 10 men, what was a difficult game turned into a near impossible task to equalise, let alone win. And so it was until the final whistle, leaving the Predators to mull over their defeat and consider what lessons should be learned.
