Continuing their home run advantage, the Pocklington Predators played host to Bishopthorpe White Rose in testing but ultimately one sided match that saw the home side drive through a substantial 4 – 1 victory before heavy snow falls threatened to call a halt to the match.

Lying just below mid-table, Bishopthorpe needed to drive hard if they were going to mount a challenge to second place Pocklington, but mount a challenge they certainly did. Not letting the home side become complacent for a single minute, the game started out tough and continued that way right until the final whistle.

Both teams came out of the starting blocks at full throttle, and it was testament to the Pocklington resolve that they managed gain control and much of the possession in those early stages. Using this initial advantage, Pocklington found their way through the visitor’s defences to see Huw Jones attempt a deep shot, and Ed Borrie pounced on the rebound to turn his defender and score.

The Predators’ second came from a corner taken by Sez Altin, which swept across the goal mouth giving Danny Shaw his first from a smart flick in. Now commanding a 2 – 0 lead, Pocklington were on fire.

With chances being created from all sides, it was all Bishopthorpe could do to hold back the onslaught, but the met the challenge and created their own opportunities, one of which culminated in a goal just before half-time. This came from deep on the wing, with a powerful shot that scraped just out of reach of keeper Alex Varley.

The dynamic play that we witnessed in the first half started to falter in the second, whether down to the late goal or just the turning weather conditions. This change gave Bishopthorpe and opportunity to get back into the game and test the home-side’s reserve. This change in tack gave Varley an opportunity to show his mettle with several outstanding saves.

Strategic substitutions got Pocklington back on track and into the driving seat once again. A late decision by George Pilkington to pass rather than volley the cross, allowed Shaw to gain his second. Another immense run up the left wing by Stuart Wright caught the visitors off guard and the resulting cross was perfectly placed but neither team were able to make anything of it.

Shaw’s hattrick, and the final goal of the match, came through a heavily defended goal area, where his first shot was saved, but the resulting rebound found it’s mark, leaving the final score at 4 – 1 to the home-side.
