Having already taken an unassailable lead over the York City & District Association Football Minor
League, the Pocklington Predators completed their penultimate league match with a convincing 4 –
1 home victory over Copmanthorpe this Sunday.
On this blustery Sunday afternoon, the Pocklington Predators played host to visitors Copmanthorpe.
The game started with Copmanthorpe taking the kick-off, but within just a few minutes of the start,
the home side notched their first as Harry Crusher received the ball just short of the box on the left
and, with a sublime left footed shot, found the back of the net.
Play settled down, with both sides creating equal opportunities. One such opportunity found the
visitors crowding the Pocklington goal area and only the quick reflexes of keeper Sam Flinton
punching the ball clear prevented the score-line evening up. A second Copmanthorpe drive caught
the Pocklington defence off guard and this time they found their mark, delivering a half time score of
1 – 1.
The second half found Pocklington raising their game and a corner taken by Nathan Saltmer was
quickly dispatched by Jamie Harvey. The Predators were on a charge!
With Jamie Harvey, Stuart Wright and Eric Hogan now keeping a tight defensive line, the Predators
were able to concentrate on the attack. The next goal came from Rob Cooney who received a wellplaced
ball from Stuart Wright and managed to evade the challenges of the Copmanthorpe defences
who backed him close into the corner, tight against the goal line. Even from this impossible angle,
Rob was determined to find the winner, launching a curling shot to find the top corner and increase
home side’s lead.
A dynamic mid-field, managed by both Nathan Smith and Huw Jones, played a crucial role
maintaining possession for the Predators and setting up much of the attacking plays, the visitor’s
defence were kept very busy.
The final goal came from a long range and accurate kick from keeper Alex Varley that allowed
Nathan Saltmer to make a break through the Copmanthorpe defence and finish with a classy touch
beating the visitor’s keeper to take the final score to 4 – 1 to the Pocklington Predators.
