Wigginton Grasshoppers U15s | 1 |
Playing host to the Wigginton Grasshoppers this weekend, the Pocklington Predators managed a convincing 3 – 1 win over the visitors to keep their challenge on the league title alive.
No matches in the York City & District Association Football Minor League under 15’s first division are easy, and Wigginton are one tough team that definitely deserve their place in the league. Their 9th place in the league belies their strengths and skills. Wigginton are, and always have been, one of the toughest teams to beat in the league. With this in mind, Pocklington were always going to have a struggle to get the better of the visitors.
Winning the toss, the home side elected to take the kick-off, and, in the face of several outstanding attacks, the half-time score remaining nil – nil. Both teams worked hard to restrain the other and create opportunities, with the Predators perhaps tipping the scales in terms of possession, yet numerous early shots just not finding the target.
There were several outstanding players on the day, not least were Matthew Terry and Stuart Wright in defence, Huw Jones working the centre and Ed Borrie working hard on the wing. Perhaps most outstanding of all was Jamie Harvey’s commitment at centre back, taking all challenges head on and giving nothing away and creating many opportunities for Pocklington to capitalise on, and Sam Flinton’s brave command of the Pocklington goal, making some exceptional saves, shoring up that final position.
After half time, things began to change in the Predator’s favour as Sez Altin managed a fabulous through ball to Danny Shaw who managed a run through the visitor’s defence to open the scoring. Danny soon chalked up his second as a cross into a crowded goal mouth found him, and he, in turn, found the back of the net.
With Wigginton fighting hard to stay in the game, Pocklington were forced onto the back foot and conceded a penalty. Wigginton were not going to let the opportunity slip and dispatched the ball neatly into the corner of the net.
Wigginton couldn’t stop the onslaught though, and Pocklington were awarded the final goal of the match as second striker Alex Varley placed a lovely ball through to George Pilkington, whose shot made the final score 3 – 1 to Pocklington.
