MARSHAL TYRES sponsored Pocklington rounded off a disapointing league campaign with the biggest win in the clubs history when they triumphed over North Ferriby Utd reserves in the Humber league cup final, sponsored by Whiteheads Fish & Chips.

Taking on a team that had done the double over them in the league at their first teams ground was always going to ensure a difficult evening was on the cards but manager Rich Bower was able to call on virtually a full strength squad and selected an experienced line up against the league runners up.

The home side made the better start though and a long throw on 6 minutes was scrambled away at the far post as Town struggled to deal with it. Another Ferriby cross eluded their forwards as it went from one side of the area to another as Pock were forced back by the pace of Ferribys play and Stu Lawson picked up an early yellow card as Town struggled to remain on level terms as they worked hard in their attempts to deny Ferriby space.

A shot at keeper Rob Kunkel on 20 minutes was the cue for Pock to start to gain some control in the game and with Dan Boneham and Kalum Horne always a threat on the break, they started to stretch the home side with good play into the channels. Kev Goodwin set up James Haigh down the left wing on 21 minutes for a great cross that Boneham was just unable to get a header on target from but with Pock now in the ascendancy, Boneham and Horne were regularly exposing the lack of pace in the Ferriby back line.

A poor Pock pass set up a Ferriby break on 40 minutes and it needed a superb tackle from Craig Hargreaves inside his own area to prevent a goal but it wasn't much longer in coming when a foul on Haigh on 41 minutes set up the opener. Rob Gibson swung in a great free kick for Lawson to attack at the back post and his header across goal set up Fraser Papprill for a flick on that hit the outstretched arm of a Ferriby defender.

Tom Rogers kept his cool and dispatched the well struck spot kick into the bottom left hand corner, despite the keeper getting a hand on it, to give Pock a priceless lead which they took into the interval knowing that there was still plenty to play for.

Town almost made the perfect start to the second half when a Lawson header from a corner only just cleared the bar but a defence splitting pass from Rogers on 52 minutes put Boneham clear and he showed great composure to fire across goal and into the bottom corner to double Pocks lead.

Ferriby almost made an immediate comeback when they played in their 18 goal forward behind the Pock defence but a heavy touch wasted a great opportunity but the chances were starting to come for both teams as the game opened out. Town introduced Ben Alport and James Saltmer to add fresh legs to their game as they started to get pressed back and forced to play on the counter attack.

Alport played a great through ball to Boneham that needed a superbly timed tackle to deny a Pock third, while a pin point cross from Haigh was just tipped away from Saltmer at the far post. Another Ferriby long throw bounced off the top of the Pock crossbar for a let off but this only lasted until the 76th minute when a deep cross to the back post saw the ball forced in despite the attentions of defenders and keeper.

This put Ferriby back in the game and Pock were now firmly under the cosh but with Mark Watkinson, Hargreaves, Papprill and Lawson outstanding as a defensive unit and being well protected by Haigh, Gibson, Rogers and Alport, Pock held firm and prevented Ferriby from creating serious threats on their goal. Alport brought a save from the Ferriby keeper when played through by Horne as the game became a great one to watch for the neutrals as both sides went for the next goal with attack and counter attack.

The knockout blow was delivered in the 86th minute when Haigh overran the ball and it was cleared by a Ferriby defender straight to Lawson. His first time pass played in Hind down the inside right channel and with no sign of the pressure that he must have been feeling, Hindy ran 30 yards before firing off a shot that beat the keeper for pace to make it 3-1 to Pock.

Despite some late Ferriby pressure and 4 minutes of added time, Town finished the game without further alarm as the final whistle blew to fantastic scenes of celebration from the Pock squad and large number of supporters who had made the short trip to Ferriby.

The club would like to thank everyone who have come to support them this season and although league success has been elusive for the clubs Senior sides, they have won 4 cups to make it a pretty decent year. These, along with the teams individual Player of the Season awards will be presented at the clubs senior section presentation evening at the KP Club on Friday 17th of May, 7.30 pm start.
