Pock travelled to the Knavesmire looking to secure their twelfth league win of the season against York Cubs.
Knowing that a win was vital to keep the pressure on their title rivals, Pock got off to the perfect start when they went a goal up inside the first five minutes. A clearance from Stuart Wright was deftly flicked on by George Pilkington into the path of Danny Shaw, who outpaced the Cubs’ defence to score from close range. One-nil, and with the determination that Pock were showing, a “cricket score” looked to be on the cards. Stuart Wright was unlucky not to double the lead on fifteen minutes, when he dragged his shot wide of goal after a flowing move down the left wing.
However, despite dominating possession and spending much of the half camped inside the Cubs’ penalty area, Pock had to wait until 30 minutes before doubling their tally. This time, Ben Potter’s persistence forced a Cubs defender to hit a weak clearance into the path of Huw Jones, who showed great technique to hit a first-time shot across the keeper and low into the bottom corner of the net.
Pock maintained the pressure on the Cubs goal right up until half-time, but despite testing the goalkeeper on numerous occasions, were unable to increase their lead.
HT 2-0
The second half began the same way the first ended: Pock enjoying almost all the possession, but just unable to turn the pressure into goals. Huw Jones was unlucky not to claim his second of the game when a twenty yard drive flew inches over the cross bar, and a sublime turn and volley from George Pilkington drew a reflex save from the Cubs’ keeper from six yards. However, Pilkington was not to be denied, and five minutes later he claimed his fifth goal in three games by steering in a free-kick from Joe Aconley to make the score 3-0, with ten minutes remaining.
With the level of dominance Pock had enjoyed, it came as a real surprise when the final goal of the game went to the home side, after a mix-up in the Pock defence was punished by a shot from close-range. But with the Pock defence holding firm until the final whistle, this proved to be little other than a consolation for the Cubs.
Pock now look to extend their unbeaten run to ten games when they visit Easingwold next Sunday.
